To assist in future-state planning, you can visualize and propose organizational changes by creating and managing scenario charts. This article explains how to merge a scenario chart into your official chart or another scenario chart.

To merge charts:

Note: To merge charts, you must be a Company Admin, HR Admin, or HR Manager and an assigned collaborator on the charts you’re merging. To learn more, refer to: Understanding User Roles & Permissions and Adjusting Visibility Settings in Scenario Charts.

  1. From the main menu, navigate to the Org Chart page.

  2. Click the chart dropdown at the top of the page to select or create a scenario chart.

  3. Click the Merge Chart button in the upper right tool panel.

  4. When the Merge Chart window opens, you’ll see the name of your source chart (the scenario chart you’re viewing). Click the Destination Chart dropdown to select the chart into which you’ll merge the source chart.

  5. Click the checkbox if you’d like to archive the source chart once it’s been merged.

Note: You can access archived charts by clicking the Show Archived Chart link beneath your active chart list. Hover over the chart name in the archived chart list and click the three-dot menu to choose: Edit Details, Restore, or Delete.

  6. Click the Merge Chart button. The destination chart will open, and a banner at the top of the chart will indicate the merge is complete. Refresh your page to observe your changes.

Understanding How Chart Merging Works

Merging a Duplicated Chart

If you are planning to utilize the merge chart feature, it is important to select the appropriate method for creating the scenario chart. If you create a scenario chart by duplicating an existing chart (recommended), Built maintains a relationship between the positions on both charts. Changes made within your chart copy can later be merged back into the chart you duplicated in a way that preserves the position history. When merging a chart copy into a destination chart other than the chart originally duplicated, the merge will follow the same rules as merging a chart created from scratch.

Merging a Chart Created from Scratch

If you create a scenario chart from scratch, there will be no association between the positions in your new chart and your destination chart. Built will add all positions from the merged portion of the source chart to the destination chart. You can then drag and drop the merged portion to the desired location on your destination chart. To ensure optimal chart visibility when moving a portion of the chart, set your Mouse/Trackpad Options (located under Display Options in the visualization tools panel) to Scroll to move chart.

Note: If a scenario chart has one or more assigned approvers, the merge chart feature will be disabled until the chart is fully approved. To learn more, refer to: Requesting Chart Approval.
