For customers of our Advanced Org Design module.

Chart Sections are smaller sections of your official chart or scenario charts tied to your organization’s hierarchical structure. You can use chart sections to organize divisions, regions, business units, and more. This article explains the benefits and rules of using chart sections and how to create, view, and edit individual sections.

Note: You can also organize teams, committees, or other groups independent of your organizational structure by creating lists.

Benefits of Chart Sections

Chart sections make it easier to visualize, navigate, and share your org chart. Once created, you can color code or display a specific section in the full chart using the org chart visualization tools. When sharing an org chart or printing an org chart, you can select specific sections to export. You can also filter reports and insights widgets by chart section. Utilizing these tools in conjunction with well-defined chart sections helps you effectively share or bring focus to one area of your official chart or a scenario chart.

Rules for Chart Sections

  • For each chart section, you must define a head position.

  • The hierarchy within a chart section will follow the existing hierarchy of the full chart. Note: Utilizing the Department field allows you to organize departments independently of hierarchy. You can utilize this field as an alternative to or in addition to Chart Sections.

  • Once you've created a section, each position on the org chart below the section head will automatically belong to this new section.

  • Sections can be "nested" within other sections.

To create a chart section:

Note: Only HR Managers, HR Admins, and Company Admins can create, edit, and delete chart sections. To learn more, refer to: Understanding User Roles and Permissions.

  1. While viewing your official chart or a scenario chart, click the Chart Sections icon in your visualization tools located in the upper left corner of the org chart.

  2. Click on the blue + icon to create a new section.

  3. Enter a name for your chart section, such as "New York Division" or "Marketing."

  4. Enter which position is at the top of the section. You can search by the title of the position or the name of the person currently filling that position to locate the correct position on the org chart.

Note: Need one person to be the head of two different chart sections? Refer to: Making One Person the Head of Two Different Chart Sections.

  5. You can also click on the color block to assign a new color for that section (optional).

  6. Click Save.

To view, edit, or remove a chart section:

  1. Hover over the chart section name in your visualization tools.

  2. Click the three-dot menu next to the chart section title.

  3. Select from the following options:

    • View Chart Section will display only that section of the org chart on the screen. To return to the full chart view, click on the section name in the panel or hover over the section name to open the three-dot menu and select Stop Viewing Chart Section.

    • Edit Chart Section will return to the edit window for that specific section and allow you to change the chart section name, chart section head, or assigned color.

    • Remove Chart Section will remove the chart section but won't remove people or positions from your org chart. You will be asked to confirm this action by clicking Remove.
