Org chart tools can be a bit restrictive when it comes to representing the actual hierarchy of your organization. In the real world, a person may report to multiple people or fill multiple positions within the company. In this article, you will learn how to represent multiple reporting relationships on your org chart.

In Built, each person must have a primary position but can also have as many secondary positions (or dotted line relationships) as needed. The primary position is shown on the org chart with a solid line. A person's secondary positions are represented by dashed/dotted lines on the org chart.

Common scenarios to utilize dotted line relationships:

  • An assistant reports to multiple executives

  • A person is temporarily filling an open position until a new person is hired

  • A person wears many "hats" within your organization, and you'd like to represent this on the org chart

To create a dotted line position for a person:

Note: You must be a Company Admin, HR Admin, or an HR Manager to create a dotted line position.

  1. From the main menu, navigate to the Org Chart page.

  2. Find the person who is going to report to multiple people.

  3. Hover over the position card and click on the three-dot menu that appears to open the position menu.

  4. Click "Add Dotted Line Relationship."

  5. In the window that opens, type the name of the person they will report to in this new dotted line relationship.
Note: You must type the name of someone who is already on the org chart.

  6. Enter an optional title for the secondary position the employee will hold. The title for this new position can be different from the title of the person's primary position.

  7. Click Save.

You should now see this person on your org chart twice—once in their primary position which has a solid line connector, and once in their new dotted line position which has a dashed line connector.

To create a dotted line relationship by working in the other direction, from the manager downward instead of from the employee upward:

  1. Create an open or filled position under the manager of the new reporting relationship by opening the three-dot menu located on the manager’s position card and selecting Add New Position Below.

  2. In the Add Position window, type the name of the person who should fill that position. Even if the person already has a primary position elsewhere in the organization, the system will let you place them in this new position as well and create a dotted line to the new manager.

Note: A person can hold an unlimited number of dotted line relationships in your organization without increasing the number of people within your Built account.
